Tipon at The Manor, Camp John Hay, Baguio on October 20, 2022.<br><br><\/em>\u201cI have never heard you say \u2018I love you\u2019,\u201d whispered an Ilocano lawyer while making love to a beautiful Spanish mestiza.<em><br><br><\/em>\u201cI have given my entire body to you and you still ask if I love you?\u201d she riposted with a feeling of irritation.<em><br><br><\/em>\u201cA call girl gives her entire body to her client. That does not mean that she loves him,\u201d the lawyer argued.<em><br><br><\/em>\u201cAre you saying I am a call girl?\u201d the mestiza cried, slapped the lawyer, and pushed him away. <em><br><br><\/em><strong>19-year-old virgin\u2019s explanation<\/strong><em><br><\/em>We asked a 19-year-old virgin with unparalleled beauty and incredibly one of the most intelligent women we have known, why Filipinas are reluctant to say \u201cI love you\u201d to someone they love. She replied that Filipinas are \u201cshy.\u201d I asked her if she was shy. She replied: \u201cVery shy.\u201d <em><br><br><\/em><strong>Other explanations<\/strong><br>The Filipina might feel she loves the man but hesitates in making a commitment. Once you say \u201cI love you,\u201d that\u2019s it, you have made a declaration that you cannot \u201cunsay.\u201d You cannot claim later that you did not mean it. That would be inappropriate, and you would lose the guy\u2019s respect, if not his affection. As they say in Ilocano \u201cbalangkantis.\u201d<em><br><br><\/em>The woman might not be sure what her feelings are. Is it love or infatuation or fascination? Or as one young girl told me \u201cpuppy love\u201d or \u201ccrush\u201d which has been described as \u201can informal term for feelings of romantic love, often felt during childhood and early adolescence.<br><br>It is an infatuation usually developed by someone\u2019s looks and attractiveness at first sight. Such feelings fade away when the object of attraction stays out of sight.\u201d<em><br><br><\/em>Several women might feel that they love their current suitor but are apprehensive that if they say, \u201cI love you\u201d, they might meet a better guy. What then? So, they delay saying \u201cI love you\u201d. <em><br><br><\/em>Some women who have been hurt by a prior relationship are very reluctant to say the word \u201cI love you.\u201d They do not want to be hurt again. As they say, \u201cOnce burned, twice shy.\u201d <em><br><br><\/em>Women who have suffered trauma from the divorce or separation of their parents are hesitant to say the word \u201cI love you.\u201d They fear that if they enter a romantic relationship, it will also deteriorate.&nbsp; <em><br><br><\/em>It has been noted that certain women want to control the relationship. By not disclosing how they feel, they have power. It leaves the man continuing the pursuit. <em><br><br><\/em>There is a report that \u201cThe disorder of alexithymia could also be a cause of not saying \u201cI love you.\u201d This psychological condition is defined as a clear difficulty in identifying and expressing one&#8217;s own emotions. Hence, sufferers can&#8217;t give a name to what they feel, and consequently, will be unable to say \u201cI love you\u201d even if they feel it.<em><br><br><\/em><strong>Some men say \u201cI love you\u201d without expecting a particular response<\/strong><em><br><\/em>There is a lawyer we know who sometimes says \u201cI love you\u201d because that is how he feels, without expecting a particular response from the woman he says it to. \u201cLove\u201d in this context does not necessarily mean romantic love.<br><br>The responses he has evoked have been: (1) Silence, (2) I love you, too, (3) I wish I had met you earlier, (4) I am happily married, and (5) Can it still perform? The last response was the most shocking, particularly coming from an attractive 30-something Filipina. The lawyer quipped: \u201cLet\u2019s test it. It takes two to tango.\u201d <em><br><br><\/em><strong>Filipina denied a visa for failing to tell the consul she loved her husband<\/strong><em><br><\/em>A 40-year-old Ilocana married an 80-something Ilocano whom she met while sitting together on a van from Manila to Ilocos Norte. The man\u2019s petition for her had been approved by USCIS. In her interview with a consular officer, he asked her why she married her husband. She replied that he is good, he is well-to-do because he had four houses, and that she was sure he could take good care of her. The consul denied her visa application.<br><br>When the husband came to consult with me, I advised him to seek reconsideration and reopen the denial. We called up his wife. I asked why she married her husband. She replied that she loved him. \u201cThen why did you not tell that to the consul?\u201d I reproached her. \u201cI was shy to say it,\u201d she replied.<br><br>We filed a motion for reconsideration and reopening and attached an affidavit signed by the wife. I accompanied the couple to the consular interview. I explained to the consul that Filipinas are very modest and shy in telling their feelings. The consul issued a visa. <em><br><br><\/em>This episode is the inspiration for my writing the lyrics of the song quoted at the beginning of this column.<em><br><br><\/em><strong>ATTY. EMMANUEL S.
